This weekend, while my wife was out of town, I needed something to do. I ended up using most of my free time to complete another free iPod deal. This time, the offer was a free iPod Shuffle for 50 short reviews of local businesses at Judy’s Book. This was one of the hardest “free” deals to complete – I actually had to work for it. But I feel a sense of accomplishment now for completing the task.
Judy’s Book tagline is “Your Friend’s Yellow Pages”. This is a business idea that I’ve thought about in the past – people need a site for referrals by real people where they can find local services and businesses. The barrier to creating such a site is content – how do you get people to fill out the referral information. In that light the free iPod Shuffle promotion for 50 reviews of 50 words or more is ideal. People like me will jump through some hoops to get an iPod! I contributed 52 reviews.
The site has received some good coverage including the New York Times article where I first read about it. Based on my user ID of 15203 and some current user ID’s of 19400 it looks like their user basis is growing quite well.
This topic fits in nicely with a suggestion that Zwack submitted in response to my Frugality for Small Family Reunions regarding finding good local food stores. With Judy’s Book and caring contributors you could find out information on local food stores worth shopping at when you are out of town. I filled in information on two local DC grocery stores which we frequent because of both price and food quality.
Judy’s Book will get a little bit more attention from me as I add enough posts to get a few free Starbucks coffee cards. But I cannot yet say how long my interest will last.
Judy’s Book has some code where you can include your five most recent posts in your blog, but the site is so slow I cannot link to it. When entering my reviews the site had an Oops moment for almost every review. They obviously need some help scaling to handle of the users that they are getting, because for the business to survive they will need many, many users.
