Value: $1.50
Significance: 3/5
One surprise the Franchise Expo was finding the 1-800-Flowers booth. I’ve known the company as an Internet source of flowers. It never crossed my mind that 1-800-Flowers had bricks and mortar stores, and that they are in fact expanding via franchising.
The Internet allows regional players national exposure. 1-800-Flowers is an example of how to one region of the county a company may be considered an Internet company, where in another region that same company may be your local flower shop. Kabloom also had a both at the Franchise Expo, and now as I travel I see various Kabloom shops illustrating that a second Internet company is in fact on the street retailing from neighborhood stores.
If the 1-800-Flowers company, along with webdesign, interests you, then you will want to take a look at Get Into This the website of one of their web front-end designers. The site is very nice looking, and has detailed how-tos, including how they integrate AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) into some of their intranet sites – see his Blog. AJAX is currently a “hot” method of making sites more dynamic without having to reload whole web pages.
The goodies received from 1-800-Flowers were 100% quality – the best quality rose I have ever seen and a flower shaped highlighter. The rose was perfectly formed and it lasted for an extremely long time. Many times on Fridays, when my wife brings home flowers that I have delivered to her office, they are already starting to wilt and decay fast. This rose was clean looking and stayed that way for quite some time. The second goodie was a multicolor highlighter in the shape of a flower. The highlighter was not extremely ground-breaking but it was useful and very appropriate for a flower company to offer.
Because of the quality of the 1-800-Flowers goodie rose, the next time I order my wife flowers, I will probably use 1-800-Flowers just to see if their deliveries are of the same quality.
