Morton Salt sent me a small booklet titled Household Hints. It asks if I need a little help around the house and provides little hints of how to use salt to solve problems, such as stains. There are 17 hints ranging from how to clean, to how to use salt in craft products.

My favorite solutions are as follows:

  1. A Breath of Fresh Air. – Clear the air with this homemade air freshener. Just cut an orange in half, remove pulp, and fill the peel with Morton® Salt. It will provide a pleasant, aromatic scent anywhere in your home.
  2. “Decaffeinates” your coffee pot. – To remove coffee stains from the inside of a glass coffee pot, add 4 teaspoons Morton® Salt, 1 cup crushed ice, and 1 tablespoon water. Gently swirl until clean, then rinse. Coffee pot should be at room temperature before cleaning. Do not use if pot is cracked or chipped.
  3. A Bit Bubbly. – To quickly chill a bottle of wine or champagne, place the bottle in an ice bucket or other tall plastic container. Add a layer of ice on the bottom and sprinkle it with a few tablespoons of Morton® Salt. Continue to layer salt and ice until it reaches the neck of the bottle. Then add water to ice level. After 10-12 minutes, open and serve. Rinse ice bucket thoroughly after use.

One more hint that I would add to such a list would be to use Morton rock salt with you ice when making ice cream. It helps cool down the ice so that your ice cream will set up harder.

The Household Hints is a nice low cost goodie that is ideal for a company to have around to sent to whomever writes in. If you are interested in the hints, they have similar hints on their website at Household Hints. It is basically the same list as the hard copy version, but there are a few additions and removals.
