Charmin is coming out with a new Mega Roll of toilet paper. To promote it, they are sending out toilet roll extenders to those who ask for them. I’m one of the unfortunate people who requested one. Not knowing what it was I filled out the form, and a few weeks later I received it.

The Mega Roll seems to be a marketing promotion trying to get you to be happy that the roll is now four times larger. So large that in fact you need a roll extender! Unfortunately, it has re-inforced my view that Charmin rolls are short and though they are soft, that there is a reason they don’t last long.

The message that I inferred is that the old Charmin rolls are so small, that by increasing them by one half an inch the company was able to quadruple the toilet paper on the roll…

  1. I have a sneaky suspicion that we’re seeing an on-purpose change of terms to pull the wool (or Charmin?) over folks’ eyes here. If I’m not mistaken, up till a couple of months ago, Charmin called their smallest roll a “single” roll. Now, it’s called a “regular” roll. Now, I see on the package that a “regular roll” has 176 sheets. But, not having a old single roll package around (and there are none in the stores), I don’t know how many sheets it had. Does anyone out there know? I’m talking about the 1-ply sheets here. Of course, the Double roll is also gone, replaced by the BIG roll… I think we’re seeing a cousin of what was pulled on us a few years ago when manufacturers started putting 4 pounds of sugar in a package that looked for all the world like the old 5lb pkg. Other fine, upstanding companies followed… the ice cream folks changed to 1.75 quarts in a package that looked JUST like the old half-gallon.

  2. Steve, I checked in the attic trying to answer your question regarding how many sheets the old single roll had, but we do not have any Charmin. Sorry I can not help, iolaire
