Last weekend I received an invitation to review the The Scholarship Blog via “ReviewMe.com”:http://ReviewMe.com landed in my email box. My first though was that the site probably was a hack job for a website created to drive ad clicks. I was surprised to find that the site had quality written content and thus accepted the invitation to do a paid review of the site.

This month the current Super Bowl XL free after rebate Pepsi/Frito Lay rebate check arrived. For the second year in a row I’ve received a lot of junk food for free. Last year the Super Bowl XXXIX netted me a cool collectable rebate check, that was promptly sent off to the bank. This year I’m preparing to do the same.
Today’s post is not about the goodies that I’ve received, but rather a service that allows me to provide goodies to others in the form of business investments.
Over the past 10 years or so, international charities and development organizations have developed an appreciation for micro loans in the developing world….
Here is a goodie for all of you who passed up on a writely beta account. Now that Google purchased the company you probably will want an account to look at the product. However, writely sign ups are closed until they move writely to the Google system.
In May I featured the Super Bowl XXXIX check which I received as part of a promotion where you buy three bags of Lays potato chips and three 12-packs of Pepsi soda, then receive a check rendering them free after rebate. Well it is back this year…
I’m pleased to announce the opening of my new website – While Supplies Last at WSLrss.com. This site is a specialized deal site, focusing on Refurbished Apple Computer Systems from The US and Canadian Apple Stores.
This weekend, Friday to Sunday, the Green Festival comes to the DC convention center. This is a wonderful opportunity to sample healthy products, gather information on environmental issues, healthy living, and other green topics. Of course, there is even a two for one coupon..
Wednesday morning, August 31st 2005, I arrived at working realizing that the Hurricane Katrina was a true national disaster. I received an email sent at 11:52PM on August 30th from the Democratic National Committee. The email offered two links, one to donate money to the Red Cross, the other was if you want to volunteer contact your local Red Cross Chapter.
Remember the Flicker Swag that I requested, received and then never wrote the followup article with photos? Well here comes another one, FeedBurner Swag.
Today, it is important to think about what you can do to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
You Can Donate Cash
You Can Volunteer
For those of you who are waiting for September 1st so that you can receive your free annual credit report from the three major reporting agencies, your wait is over. Annualcreditreport.com is now active for VA/MD/DC residents and I assume the rest of the East Coast. Visit www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/freerepalrt.htm for confirmation that this is the correct site.
It’s time for round two at Coudal Partners, the next game (the other fish) is School of Government.
This weekend my wife was out of town. I ended up using most of my free time to complete another free iPod deal. This time the offer was a free iPod Shuffle for 50 short reviews of local businesses at Judy’s Book. This was one of the hardest “free” deals to complete – I actually had to work for it. But, I feel a sense of accomplishment for completing the task.

If you enjoyed the Whose Fish game two weeks ago, then you probably will enjoy Philipp Lenssen’s Games for the Brain site. He has a variety of good quality logic games, including: Counterfeit where you pick the difference between two pieces of art…
Thanks to the folks over at Signal vs. Noise, I’m figuring out a nice little logic game titled Whose Fish? posted at Coudal Partners. If your looking for something let you think, please about give it a try. I’m close to finishing it, but of course my wife already has the answer!
I’m very busy at work this month, but we had time to make Watermelon Gazpacho last weekend! Here is the recipe, make it and enjoy!
Recently, my wife and I returned from my family’s biannual reunion in Washington State at the The Lodge Near Mt. Rainier. Since I organized it (found a roomy location and communicated with the family), my wife took over the menu planning. Thanks to my wife’s casual meal plan and smart shopping, I have some good frugality hints for small family reunions or group trips.
Currently I’m right outside of Mt. Rainer in Washignton, attending a family reunion! In light of my absence I’d like to offer you this link to free flickr swag.
A few months ago, I received a response from Del Monte to my request for goodies. They said that at this time they do not have any promotional items to send to me. With their letter they included two coupons for $1 off for any Del Monte canned food, snack cup, ketchup or pickles.
The odd thing is that I did not directly contact Del Monte…
In the late 1980’s, my family lived through an ice cream boom while commercial fishing during the summers. I don’t know if it corresponded to a true boom in the ice cream industry or rather we were new to an ice cream rich environment.
Here is another tea related goodie that has come in the mail for the previous two months. What is most interesting for you is, it looks as if you could receive it yourself. My request for goodies from The Republic of Tea was that I was put on their catalog mailing list, and each month they send out a one tea bag sample along with their catalog.
My wife and I attend many wine events in the DC area, so when we had the opportunity to volunteer at the Washington D.C. International Wine & Food Festival, we happily attended. One goodie that made its first appearance was clear plastic cocktail plates.
When I recieved the Choice Organic Tea package, I was very interested in trying the Organic Chai Spice Black Tea. … Not only was the aroma balanced and strong, but the flavor was also smooth and strong. … My wife sampled the Organic Northwest Blackberry Tea, also part of their Gourmet Blends line of organic teas.
Last winter, we saw an offer in New York where you were able to buy three bags of Lays pototao chips and three 12-packs of Pepsi soda, then receive them for free after a mail in rebate. … What is especially interesting to me, is they have done up the check with nice color logos for Pepsi, NFL, Lays and Super Bowl XXXIX.
One surprise the Franchise Expo was finding a 1-800-Flowers booth. I’ve known the company as an Internet source of flowers. It never crossed my mind that 1-800-Flowers had bricks and mortar stores, and that they are in fact expanding via franchising.
Generally, I spend about two hours thinking about and writing each of my two weekly posts. With that time commitment, I’m becoming more interested in how many people are reading the site. Determining how many people visit my site is a little hard. I can count sessions or page views, but I am finding it hard to determine how many people are reading the site via a RSS reader. So I’ve decided to move my RSS feeds over to Feedburner’s Service.
Morton Salt sent me a small booklet titled Household Hints. It asks if I need a little help around the house and provides little hints of how to use salt to solve problems such as stains. There are 17 hints ranging from how to clean, to how to use salt in craft products.
On Tuesday, I posted about the box of goodies I received from Celestial Seasonings and completely overlooked another wonderful goodie they offer to anyone in the Boulder, Colorado area – guest tours of their factory.
Celestial Seasonings batch of goodies was truly a boatload – one full six box case of Moroccan Pomegranate Red tea! Normally I do not count quantity as a significance factor but in this case it seems as if I should. Luckily this is still an innovative products as it takes the South African rooibos tea and blends it with Pomegranate turning it into a traditional feeling Celestial Seasonings tea with a wonderful painting of a monkey enjoying a cup of Pomegranate tea.
Red Gold packers of premium tomato and & food products sent in a package of promotional goodies. It contained two very cool adjustable measuring spoons, three refrigerator magnets, coupons and a letter which taught me a few interesting facts about the packing of tomatoes and Red Gold.
Last year, we paid the steep $20/person onsite entry free to attend the International Franchise Expo to learn about the various franchise opportunities. Obviously, at such an event there were numerous goodies to be had, including lots of ice cream and food to be consumed on the spot. … The first goodie that I will evaluate is a hand massager from The Woodhouse Spas Corp, because it was a nice goodie and it provides me an opportunity to talk about what looks like an upcoming “hot” franchising trend.
When my wife and I visit the Teaism Tea House/restaurant on 8th Street in Washington, DC for their Thursday and Friday night happy hour, which features a complimentary asian dish and salad, we usually order at least one glass of Moroccan Mint Iced Tea. Because of that, I was happy this weekend to have the opportunity to sample the Choice Organic Tea’s Moroccan Mint Green Tea.
Just in case you are wondering what exactly Goodiesblog.com is, here is an explanation sent to a company who was nice enough to ask what do I hope to achieve if they participate.
Choice Organic Tea sent me a package of goodies last week. It included 8 single packages of fair trade certified organic tea, 5 single packages of organic tea, 4 double packages of organic tea, and paperwork describing their tea flavors as well as their commitment to organic and Fair Trade teas.
Over the last few weeks, a couple of rejection letters have dribbled in. But two of those rejections had hidden goodies inside thanks to Frito Lay and Francesco Rinaldi.
Charmin is coming out with a new Mega Roll of toilet paper. To promote it, they are sending out toilet roll extenders to those who ask for them. I’m one of the unfortunate people who requested one.
These days, it’s getting a little depressing because I’m not receiving many goodies in response to my letters. But luckily, a nice gift just arrived from my mentor over at Google Blogoscoped.
A few weeks ago, I recieved our Tide Coldwater sample via an internet offer – or maybe it came unrequested. The “new” Tide Coldwater promotes itself as formulated for cold water….
Here is an old internet goodie which unfortunately is no longer available, Little Penguin wine charms. The small charms feature a cute little penguin on top of a label ….
The Old Orchard six pack cooler makes me think about the promotional goodie industry and how mass production standardizes goodies across companies. Think of a beverage industry conference – what goodies do you think most companies will offer?
Starbucks sent a rejection letter in response to my request:
Can you please send me some promotional goodies or samples of your products?
The reason given was that my idea doesn’t align with their needs.
Last December, the deal sites were awash with information on a “Citibank”/clicks/log.php?http://citibank.com promotion where if you opened a checking account, funded it, and paid two bills per month for one year they would send you an iPod. Of course, I was one of those who believed this was a wonderful opportunity, despite the lifestyle changes needed to get the iPod.
On Friday, I picked up my iPod Mini from the UPS office!
I’m very happy with GoDaddy’s DNS service. This morning the host for my site went offline due to data-center power failure. Within minutes of making the DNS change with Godaddy my backup location started receiving my site’s traffic. Getting the backup running was very important due to the nice traffic spike BoingBoing is sending me.
So thank you GoDaddy.
Evaluating household items is going to difficult at times. How do you rate an item that is “improved” by by changing the package size, color or usage instructions? ….. That said, I was happy to receive the 64 oz bottle of Old Orchard Organics 100% Concord Grape, it is a new product that is timely and a quality improvement.
Today my wife, called me all excited because a box of goodies arrived via UPS next day air from Old Orchard Brands LLC!
Today, I received 3 unopened letters back marked return to sender or insufficient address courtesy of the post office. The moral of the story is the post office does not like the addresses printed on product boxes! Of the 26 letters sent, 18 lacked . . .
Last fall, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian opened in Washington DC. We missed the opening and thus missed samples of Honest Tea’s First Nation Peppermint blend. So we were excited to get samples at the Green Festival.
On Tuesday, I sent out 26 letters to manufactures or distributors to get the real goodies flowing in. The letter asked …
The firms I contacted were as follows:
Honest Tea Inc ….
New and improved products are always hard to evaluate and Tylenol 8 Hour falls into that category. Luckily, I do not have much pain, especially pain that lasts for over 8 hours. So, it was difficult to determine if this new and improved product is much better than the old Tylenol. I can say that it does work on headaches.
Carbery’s Dubliner Irish Cheese is a cheese which is extremely popular this time of year with St. Patrick’s Day on everyone’s mind. I don’t know if that is why they were at the Washington D.C. International Wine & Food Festival, but we were happy to see them.
Choice Organic Tea’s Mango Ceylon with Vanilla had a very smooth light flavor for a black tea. The mellow mango vanilla flavor was very drinkable.
Would you like to try some instant coffee? You still can thanks to Nescafe’s Taster’s Choice (free) 2 Week Supply promotion.
I loaded up on the goodies at a preview for Millions. Mix 107.3 was there giving out prizes for answering questions. This time instead of white bags with t-shirts and such they had a nice black Millions bag.
Dr. Bronner’s 18-1 Hemp Lavender Pure-Castile Soap sampler was a wonderful all around goodie. The soap is highly concentrated so a little goes a long way. I used it during a 8 day trip to Costa Rica and hardly made a dint on it. You only need to use a few drops with some water for a shampoo.
